What is Pediatric Surgery?
What is Pediatric Surgery?
As it name indicates, pediatric surgery is that aspect of surgery dedicated to resolving surgical problems in childhood.
What sparked the necessity to entrust these problems to specialized professionals, dedicated exclusively to children’s surgery?
The answer is quite simple. Children are not small adults. Many of their illnesses requiring surgical intervention present special characteristics that differ from adults. The delicate nature of their tissues requires special tact and handling. Even to those not well versed in the subject, it is clear that operating on a baby of 4 kilos demands different skills from operating on an adult of 80 kilos.
The existence of congenital anomalies led some surgeons, even in ancient times, to specialize in treating children, devising specific techniques. Little by little, those surgical interventions involving children have been encompassed in pediatric surgical treaties written by professionals. These constitute the core of our specialty and cover practically all branches of surgery.
As pediatric surgeons, our goal is to resolve surgical problems involving children, from birth to adolescence. That is the focus of our extensive professional experience.
